How It Started
How Mackla Construction Got Started
Connor left school at 16 and went straight into the trades, starting out as an exterior plasterer and AAC panel installer. That's where he learned the fundamentals, but carpentry was where he found what he actually loved: the reward of building something real and handing over a finished job a client is genuinely happy with. He moved into a building apprenticeship and finished it in two and a half years, becoming a registered Licensed Building Practitioner in 2019.
Not long after qualifying, Connor made the decision to go out on his own. He'd always wanted to run his own business, and with a young family at home, he wanted to prove to them, and to himself, that hard work actually gets you somewhere. Mackla Construction is named after his son and daughter, a name he's building into something recognised across the Christchurch region, not just a company name on an invoice. That same standard carries through everything the team builds, from a new home to a renovation.
